Brave Little one

Kelsey Trevett has had a day to remember. The young member of the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust met Prince Harry at an awards ceremony run by the charity Well Child. But that's not all, the brave youngster was there to receive an award. Watford's Kelsey Trevett has been named as a winner in the prestigious national WellChild Awards 2009 for the age 6-8 category.

The seven-year-old, who has lost the sight in both eyes following a rare form of eye cancer, was picked from record numbers of nominations to win the category of Bravest Child in these Awards which celebrate the courage of children coping with serious illnesses or complex conditions and are run by the WellChild – the national charity for sick children.

Kelsey was one of the stars of the show at September's high profile Awards ceremony, which has been attended by many of WellChild's celebrity supporters, including Royal Patron Prince Harry, over the past few years.

Kelsey was just 16 weeks old when he was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma. After six months of chemotherapy and other procedures the cancer was in remission and despite losing one eye and most of the sight in the other, Kelsey soon caught up on his developmental milestones. Tragically when he was five the cancer returned but this time it was Kelsey who took charge, making it clear to his family that despite his rigorous treatment regime, nothing need change and he could carry on with normal life in between.

Kelsey's mother Joanne nominated her son because of his amazing positive attitude and determination to keep going even after having cancer the second and time learning he would lose his sight. Kelsey's reaction to this news was to casually reassure his mother "oh well, you can't everything you want, can you Mum?" The WellChild Award judges learned how Kelsey announced that he was going straight back to school the day after arriving home after a long period in hospital following major surgery and has continued at mainstream school recently passing tap and swimming exams and now learning Braille.

Joanne said: "Nothing can stop Kelsey getting on with life. We are so proud of his positive attitude and all he has achieved."

Kelsey has recently featured in our members' newsletter and the full article can be found by clicking the title in the sub menu to the left of this page entitled:'When Harry met Kelsey' or by cicking here www.chect.org.uk/page.php?id=38&aid=340&s=8
