Richard WalkerRichard's retinoblastoma was discovered in both eyes in July 1996. He had chemotherapy (very strong cancer fighting medicine) and cryotherapy (freezing treatment). His right eye got better but the left eye didn't, so it had to be removed and he was given a plastic eye instead. Afterwards, he had more treatment called radiotherapy. The good news is he has been OK ever since 1998.
He has a yearly eye check up. He does not wear glasses and has excellent vision in his right eye. His artificial left eye is checked regularly while he is still growing.
…. News from Richard …..
I am 8 years old, and live near Poole, Dorset. I have a baby sister called Emma who was 2 in December 2004 and she is sometimes quite cheeky and naughty but I love her to bits.
I have many hobbies including football (I play for a local team), am learning to play the clarinet, tennis, cubs, swimming, computer games including Tony Hawkes on PlayStation 2. Although I have Retinoblastoma and only have sight in my right eye this does not stop me doing any of my hobbies and activities.
I moved from Cardiff, where I was born, to Dorset in August 2004 and I really love it here. There is so much to see and do and the sea is only a few miles away. I go to a lovely local school which is very close to my home and it only takes me 10 minutes to walk to it. I have lots of friends in school. My teacher is called Mr Hendry and he is really nice.
I have been on holiday with Camp Quality (www.campqualityuk.org.uk) which is an organisation providing a holiday experience and much more for children like me who have had cancer or who are currently having treatment for cancer. I have been to Camp Quality three times and have really enjoyed all the activities. Also 'The Make a Wish Foundation' (www.make-a-wish.org.uk) sent me and my parents to Florida for a week and we stayed in a very special place called GIVE KIDS THE WORLD. I had a fabulous time including sitting in the pilot seat of the Boeing 777 with the captain's hat on. |
